Commission for The Washington Post to create a lettering piece to represent Mexico City in their new city guide By The Way.
The Washington Post –
By The Way.
Their idea was to represent each city through a local's perspective, and after several tests and trying different looks, I chose to work with a style that honors "Día De Muertos", a very unique tradition in Mexico. The lettering piece was designed as a slab serif style, but then I did some adjustments to convert it into a stencil. The letterforms were then arranged into a composition with ornaments resembling the ones found in "papel picado", or bunting, one of the most traditional and unique decorations found in Mexico.
What: Lettering + Art Direction |Where: Washington, DC. |Client: The Washington Post
As you may imagine, working for The Washington Post was a huge honor for me, so when Dia de muertos came around in Mexico, I took the opportunity to gather some cempasúchil flowers, which are typically used to honor the dead on this tradition, and staged a photo shoot for this project with the help of my friend Tomás Salazar.
